THE PREDICTION

21-year-old Xinyu Wang comes into the US Open at a career-high WTA world ranking of 56th after backing up an ITF title with a run to the quarter-finals of Tennis in the Land this week. The Chinese up-and-comer is at her best on a hardcourt with huge potential on the surface and she looks the considerable favourite here despite having to play the villain. World number 127 Katie Volynets, also 21, qualified handily this week to make the main draw at the US Open for a third time but she has yet to win a match in New York, although her run to the third round in Melbourne back in January was encouraging. The American has been ranked as highly as 74th only recently but she has struggled off the tour in recent months to look a little underpowered here. Qualifying could give the home hopeful, who will be backed by a partisan crowd, a bit of a lift but back Wang to earn at least a set as the likelier of two capable victors.
