World number six Marketa Vondrousova finished runner-up to Ash Barty at Roland-Garros five years ago and she proved herself a pressure player last summer with a stupendous, out-of-the-blue run to the Wimbledon title on her least experienced surface.
The 24-year-old conceded just four games to Rebeka Masaraova on Monday to get a solid foothold in the draw but she will find tougher fare against world number 108 Katie Volynets, who brings momentum from qualifying into the second round after beating Aleksandra Krunic in straight sets.
22-year-old Volynets took the first set from Aryna Sabalenka before a competitive defeat to the world number two in Rome a few weeks ago and she is well capable of starting fast against Vondrousova, who has only recently rediscovered her mojo. The sensible concession is backing Vondrousova to win outright on this occasion.
