THE PREDICTION
World number 108 Thanasi Kokkinakis passed a significant personal test on Wednesday with a first win in five sets since his days as a rising young player back in 2015, when he upset fellow Aussie Bernard Tomic to reach the third round here in Paris for the first time. The 27-year-old has struggled with an inordinate amount of injury setbacks since then and suffered some very tight five-set defeats to top players in recent seasons, none more than that incredible second round thriller against Andy Murray at the Australian Open in January that he lost from two up in the early hours of the morning. It remains to be seen how well the Aussie can recover after a four-hour slog against former champion Stan Wawrinka on Wednesday but he certainly stands a chance against world number 11 Karen Khachanov as the pair have relatively similar games. Khachanov, also 27, survived an early scare on Sunday in a five-set comeback over Constant Lestienne but he looked solid in a kind second round match against qualifier Radu Albot.
Kokkinakis has never reached the round of 16 at a Grand Slam but his opponent has made the semi-finals in each of his last two, losing to eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz at the US Open last summer and Stefanos Tsitsipas in Melbourne in January. Khachanov won their only previous encounter in straight sets in Monte-Carlo five years ago but this match should see sets go both ways, particularly as the Paris crowd will likely get fully behind the underdog. Back both players to win at least a set if you can but otherwise consider taking a tiebreak, or even two, here between two of the harder serves to break on tour.
