World number 15 Karen Khachanov lost his first match back on tour since reaching the semi-finals of the Australian Open for the first time in January, falling to Botic van de Zandschulp in straight sets at the Dubai Tennis Championships last week. It remains to be seen if the Russian can improve on that return to tour after making his second-successive semi-finals at a major tournament but this is a relatively kind opener against world number 82 Oscar Otte despite the fact that the German won their only previous meeting at Halle last summer. 29-year-old Otte claimed only his third win of what has been a tricky season so far in straight sets against Laslo Djere on Wednesday but it was an encouraging way to snap a three-match losing streak. Otte came back from a set down to beat Khachanov on home soil in Germany last season at his peak but he is some way off that now. Khachanov’s current level is hard to discern right now but the reasonable move looks to be backing the Russian to come through outright.
