This should be an entertaining clash between tricky left-hander Yoshihito Nishioka and the industrious Jordan Thompson, who has lost each of their three previous encounters in three sets. World number 49 Nishioka can be a terribly hard player to overcome if his disruptive game can get at your weapons, with a few head-to-heads as one-sided as this on tour, but world number 55 Thompson comes in to Paris-Bercy with some of his better form in recent seasons after a remarkable upset over Alexander Zverev at the Tokyo Open – where he also took eventual champion Ben Shelton to three sets before defeat. Thompson lost to Roman Safiullin in qualifying but made the main draw as a lucky loser, allowing him to play with the freedom of a second wind against Nishioka. The Japanese enjoyed an excellent run to the Zhuhai final last month before defeat to Karen Khachanov but three defeats from five since makes this a tough call. The sensible pick is backing Nishioka to win at least a set and the tempting risk is taking the same option in Thompson’s favour.
