THE PREDICTION

This could be a thrilling battle on Margaret Court Arena between popular home hopeful Jordan Thompson and world number seven Stefanos Tsitsipas, who finished runner-up to Novak Djokovic here last season. 25-year-old Tsitsipas came back from a set down to beat lucky loser Zizou Bergs on Monday, doing well to recalibrate quickly to a new challenger after Matteo Berrettini pulled out of their blockbuster fixture, but there has been a fragility in the Greek’s game for a number of seasons now that makes this a genuine potential upset. World number 47 Thompson needed five sets to overcome fellow Aussie Aleksandar Vukic on Monday but he will enjoy a full partisan atmosphere in the second round, on a show court, on Wednesday against a player whom he upset in their previous meeting at Indian Wells last March.

Tsitsipas leads Thompson 2-1 in their head-to-head record and they have, notably, shared three tiebreaks in the eight sets played together to offer a few options here. Back Thompson to earn at least a set, two weeks on from a huge confidence-boosting victory over the returning Rafael Nadal in Brisbane, and consider adding at least one tiebreak in a match that Tsitsipas should eventually come through.

TIP: JORDAN THOMPSON TO WIN A SET
