World number 21 Frances Tiafoe is the defending champion here in Houston but he only just scraped through his opener over James Duckworth on Thursday as he continues to struggle for form. The 26-year-old has managed to win back-to-back matches just twice since his gaining quarter-final exit to Ben Shelton at the US Open last summer and he has failed to beat anyone ranked inside the top 30 this season, suggesting in-form Jordan Thompson has a strong chance at the upset.
29-year-old Thompson will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 31st after coming back from a set down to edge past Aleksandar Kovacevic on Thursday and he will be encouraged by claiming his first back-to-back wins since finally securing his first ATP title at the Los Cabos Open in February. The pair share a 1-1 head-to-head, albeit from 2019, but it is notable that Thompson has earned at least a set in each of their encounters.
