World number three Jessica Pegula and number nine Taylor Fritz looked a strong combination on Friday, winning well after losing their first set to Czechia’s Marie Bouzkova and Jiri Lehecka. Pegula is also the world number five in doubles on the WTA tour after finding a brilliant understanding with Coco Gauff last season but the pair struggled with WTA Finals expectations last November and she should be all the better for that relieving victory on Friday. Should the tie end up levelled at 2-2 it is likely that Germany will airdrop in Alexander Zverev and Laura Siegemund to replace an inferior partnership of Julia Lohoff and Fabian Fallert but it is likelier still that this tie is all sewn up with Pegula able to seal it when she faces Siegemund in the opening singles. For that reason, this match is best left alone.
