THE PREDICTION
World number 17 Jelena Ostapenko bucked her recent trend of three-set battles to upset fourth seed Jessica Pegula in straight sets on Wednesday and she suddenly looks a dark horse for the China Open title. The 26-year-old stunned then world number one Iga Swiatek to reach the quarter-finals of the US Open last month and her limo defeat to Coco Gauff after that got better with age as the teenager went on to win the title in New York. World number 22 Liudmila Samsonova overcame Marta Kostyuk in three tight sets on Wednesday to back-up an excellent result over Petra Kvitova in the second round and she looks determined to end the season strongly after failing to defend her three WTA titles won in quick succession this time last year. Two of the fiercer hitters on tour will meet for a likely thriller here and Ostapenko has won both of their matches on hardcourts to lead 2-1 in their head-to-head, with Samsonova taking their Madrid Masters match on clay back in April. Three sets seem likely here but with all three of their previous encounters seeing straight sets, back Ostapenko to earn at least one to leave a tight result up to chance.
