THE LOWDOWN

JANNIK SINNER

World number four Jannik Sinner is the only male player to have reached the quarter-finals without dropping a set in Melbourne after an assured victory over Karen Khachanov on Sunday. The 22-year-old has matched his best Australian Open run by reaching the last eight for a second time, with this his fifth Grand Slam quarter-final already, but his best major result was a semi-final exit to Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon last summer. Since that defeat to the Serb, Sinner has beaten Djokovic three times in singles and doubles (singles at the ATP Finals, both at the Davis Cup Finals) to display his exponential growth over the last six months and he is fast-becoming the main threat to the world number one here.

ANDREY RUBLEV

World number five Andrey Rublev is through to the 10th Grand Slam quarter-final of his career after a remarkable effort against Alex de Minaur on Sunday saw him come back from 2-1 down to win with a vengeance. The 26-year-old has never made it past this stage of a major tournament but he brought solid form into the campaign after claiming his 18th ATP title in Hong Kong at the start of the season as a prolific winner at ATP 250 and 500 level.

THE PREDICTION

This promises to be Jannik Sinner’s first considerable test at the Australian Open as he takes on a player ranked just one below him in Andrey Rublev, who found some of his best tennis against Alex de Minaur on Sunday. The Russian, however, has a clear mental block at this stage of a Grand Slam that is fast becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy. Rublev has never been one to blow his own trumpet but there is a distinct lack of self-belief in his abilities against the very top players on tour that should serve to aid Jannik Sinner in the key moments here. Sinner leads their head-to-head 4-2 but he was forced to retire injured in the third game of their first encounter four years ago to make a 4-1 lead more reflective. The Italian won both of their encounters in straight sets last season, on hardcourts, to look the solid favourite here but back him outright with Rublev well capable of forcing a fourth or even fifth set.

TIP: JANNIK SINNER TO WIN
