THE PREDICTION
World number 47 Lorenzo Sonego is far better than his current deflated ranking suggests but he has struggled to find anything like his best level, at least consistently enough, in recent seasons. All bets are off as to which version of the popular, flashy Italian turns up to this likely thriller late on Centre Court on Thursday but Sonego came agonisingly close to beating Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals here three years ago and a raucous home support will be desperate to give him everything they have in the absence of Jannik Sinner and Matteo Berrettini.
World number 64 Dusan Lajovic blows hot and cold perhaps even more than Sonego but he is a serious threat to most players on his favoured clay, which a three-set exit to Stefanos Tsitsipas in the semi-finals of the Barcelona Open last month attests to. An early exit to Thiago Monteiro last time out in Madrid limits expectations for the Serb, as does trailing Sonego 1-3 in their head-to-head, but the pair are 1-1 on clay and their recent meeting in Stockholm last October edged the Italian’s way in three sets. Back Sonego to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
TIP: LORENZO SONEGO TO WIN A SET
