THE LOWDOWN
World number two Iga Swiatek won her fourth Grand Slam title at Roland-Garros this summer, a third overall in Paris, but she failed to reach the finals at any of the other three majors to see Aryna Sabalenka usurp her at the top of the sport. Swiatek already boats a remarkable 16 WTA titles to her name at just 22 years old and she added a sixth Masters trophy to that haul with a resurgent campaign in Beijing earlier this month.
24-year-old Marketa Vondrousova comes into Cancun at a career-high WTA world ranking of sixth after her incredible run from nowhere to the Wimbledon title in July. The Czech has reached a Grand Slam final before, finishing runner-up to Ash Barty at Roland-Garros in 2019, but she had won just two matches at SW19 before her near-perfect campaign this summer to totally stun the tour. Quarter-final exits in Cincinnati and New York since suggest her top level is still very strong but a shoulder issue has hampered her progress for much of the last few months, with her last win coming on September fourth at the US Open.
THE PREDICTION
Iga Swiatek won each of her three Group Stage matches at the WTA Finals in Fort Worth last season before a three-set exit to Aryna Sabalenka in the semi-finals and she will be desperate to reassert her dominance here. The Pole leads Vondrousova 2-0 in their head-to-head, notably ending her Cincinnati run in August, to look the clear favourite in paper but underestimate Vondrousova at your peril. The Czech’s fitness is questionable at best here but conditions in Cancun could knock Swiatek off of her stride early on, making an outright pick for the Pole the suitably cautious call.
BETTING TIP: Iga Swiatek to win.
