World number two Iga Swiatek can return to world number one this week if she significantly out-performs Aryna Sabalenka and the top seed’s defeat to Jessica Pegula on Tuesday will give her an extra boost of motivation. The 22-year-old handed Marketa Vondrousova a second-set bagel in an impressive start to her campaign in Cancun, making it seven wins on the spin on tour after winning the Beijing Masters via a semi-finals result over Coco Gauff.
World number three Coco Gauff broke Ons Jabeur’s serve five times and held her own throughout a very impressive opener on Tuesday, claiming her first WTA Finals victory to exorcise some demons from last season’s poor debut. This could be a big marker for the WTA Finals champion, then, and despite her all-improved aura on court Gauff still has some way to go before she can be backed to beat Swiatek comfortably.
