World number 56 Claire Liu did well to beat lucky loser Anna-Karolina Schmiedlova in straight sets with little time to recalibrate after Alison Van Uytvanck pulled out of their first round match. The 22-year-old will be well-backed as the home underdog here but world number one Iga Swiatek is an immensely popular player wherever she goes and she should be warmly received despite playing a California native. 21-year-old Swiatek is the defending champion here after she picked up the Indian Wells title along with five other trophies in her remarkable 37-match winning streak last season and she should be able to react strongly to her loss to Barbora Krejcikova at the Dubai Masters last time out. There may be an initial blip but it would be a surprise to see anything other than a straight-sets victory for the Pole.
