World number 101 Alexei Popyrin beat Zhizhen Zhang in three sets on Thursday to make it five wins from nine games so far this season, already more than he claimed in the whole of a woeful 2022. The 23-year-old still looks a little vulnerable on court but a five-set victory over Taylor Fritz at the Australian Open in January is proof of what he can be capable of when his confidence matches his powerful game. World number 11 Hubert Hurkacz claimed the biggest title of his career around this time two years ago when he stunned the field to win the Miami Open and he recently claimed a sixth ATP title at the Open 13 two weeks ago. The 26-year-old performed reasonably well at the Dubai Tennis Championships last week before losing in straight sets to runner-up Novak Djokovic in the quarter-finals and whilst he is the clear favourite here the door is certainly ajar for Popyrin. Hurkacz beat the Aussie in straight sets at this stage of Indian Wells two years ago but backing the Pole to come through outright looks the suitably cautious move this time around.
