THE LOWDOWN

HUBERT HURKACZ

World number 10 Hubert Hurkacz got his Australian Open campaign underway well enough with a hard-fought four-set victory over Egor Gerasimov. The 24-year-old reached the semi-finals of Wimbledon last season after a famous straight-sets victory over Roger Federer in the quarters and a stunning two-day slog over Daniil Medvedev. Hurkacz added three more ATP titles to his career total of four last season, including a first Masters title at the Miami Open.

ADRIAN MANNARINO

World number 69 Adrian Mannarino took the first set against James Duckworth and then the final two in a hard-fought five-set first round victory over the Aussie. 33-year-old Mannarino set a career-high ATP world ranking of 22nd back in 2018 and he went on to win his only ATP title to date a year later at ‘s-Hertogenbosch on grass.

THE PREDICTION

Hurkacz beat Mannarino in straight sets at the Rotterdam Open last season in their only previous meeting but this match should see some moments go the Frenchman’s way. Mannarino’s best performance in an otherwise difficult 2021 season came against Roger Federer at Wimbledon last summer and he may well have come through were it not for an unfortunate injury in the fourth set. He can often find his best level in the biggest occasions and this should be an eye-catching battle between two players with some excellent weapons. Hurkacz should be better than his first round performance but the outright pick is still the sensible one here.
