THE PREDICTION
World number six Holger Rune looked in control against Tomas Martin Etcheverry on Friday before the Argentine managed to force a tight decider. 20-year-old Rune will be pleased with his quick progress under new coach Boris Becker but dropped sets to Etcheverry and Miomir Kecmanovic this week are still far from his best level that we first saw blossom this time last season in his memorable run to the Paris Masters title at Novak Djokovic’s expense. World number 19 Felix Auger-Aliassime will be the better pleased of the two after his own three-set battle with up-and-comer Alexander Shevchenko on Friday. The defending Swiss Indoors champion also came into title-winning form this time last season before enduring the first real poor spell of his career in 2023 but yesterday’s match made it three wins on the spin for the first time since Indian Wells in March to show real progress.
This is a really tough call between two players who have struggled with fitness and form in recent months but both are clear top 10 quality at their best. Auger-Aliassime beat Rune to the title here in their first encounter last season but Rune has since won twice to take their head-to-head up to 2-1 – including very recently in Beijing. Back the Dane to avenge last season’s final with an outright call but consider at least a set for a promising accumulator.
BETTING TIP: Holger Rune to win.
