THE PREDICTION
World number 76 Rebecca Peterson won two WTA titles at the Nanchang and Tianjin Opens back in 2019 but she has since drifted out of the top 50. The 26-year-old beat an out-of-sorts Aryna Sabalenka in Adelaide earlier this season but frankly the Belarussian was beating herself throughout January and Peterson’s performances elsewhere have been underwhelming. World number 91 Harmony Tan has a decent chance of the mini-upset here after qualifying well for the main draw of Indian Wells. However, Peterson won the previous meeting between these two fairly recently in straight sets in the first round of the Linz Open last November and revenge for Tan would be something of a surprise. Taking Peterson to win at least a set is the suitably cautious pick here, with Tan well capable of transferring her qualifying momentum over to the first round.
