THE PREDICTION

Former world number four Caroline Garcia is one of the more enigmatic players on the WTA tour capable of beating anyone on her day – especially on her favoured clay. The 28-year-old reached the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros in 2017 for a best showing at the majors and the last of her career total seven WTA titles came on grass at the Nottingham Open in 2019 but there is still a sense that she has more to give. The Frenchwoman beat Jessica Pegula in straight sets last Tuesday but then lost 6-0, 6-2 to Barbora Krejcikova in the quarter-finals for a view of both sides of her current game. She should be winning this match in straight sets over world number 165 Hailey Baptiste but the 20-year-old qualified well last week with a good result over Nina Stojanovic and that momentum will be hard to stop on her Australian Open debut. Leave this one out of an accumulator but taking Garcia to win at least a set is not even that cautious before we have seen her working level in Melbourne.
