THE LOWDOWN

GRIGOR DIMITROV

World number 20 Grigor Dimitrov surprisingly dominated his match with Diego Schwartzman on Wednesday as he handed the Argentine a first-set bagel. The 30-year-old has enjoyed some excellent results on clay over the last month, including wins over Casper Ruud and Hubert Hurkacz on his way to the semi-finals of the Monte-Carlo Open. Dimitrov won his only Masters title to date at the 2017 Cincinnati Open on his way to ending the year at world number three with victory at the ATP Finals.

STEFANOS TSITSIPAS

World number five Stefanos Tsitsipas went down an early break to Lucas Pouille on Wednesday before rallying well to beat the Frenchman in straight sets. The 23-year-old successfully defended his Monte-Carlo Open title last month, defeating world number three Alexander Zverev in the semi-finals before beating Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the final, and he looks like returning to the kind of form that saw him reach a first Grand Slam final at last season’s Roland-Garros. Tsitsipas took the first two sets in that final before losing in five to Novak Djokovic.

THE PREDICTION

Grigor Dimitrov is back promising tennis fans the world again after some recent excellent results on tour and his domination of clay specialist Diego Schwartzman puts him at an excellent working level to take on Stefanos Tsitsipas here. However, the Bulgarian has so often struggled to put away the very top players, let alone string successive huge performances together, and Tsitsipas has won their two most recent meetings in straight sets including at last month’s Barcelona Open. The Greek is still more fallible than he would like to be at this stage of the clay swing but he leads Dimitrov 3-1 in their head-to-head and 2-0 on clay, making backing him to win outright look sensible and in straight sets reasonable.
