THE PREDICTION
This should be a thrilling, graceful clash between two of the silkier shot-makers on tour. World number 20 Grigor Dimitrov will be the far better rested of the two after Ugo Humbert pulled out of their quarter-final, with rain delaying Thursday’s play into Friday, whilst Dan Evans was forced to play twice. However, the world number 30 thrived under the pressure to beat first Alexander Shevchenko and then a pre-tournament favourite in Frances Tiafoe in straight sets apiece – with his match against the second seed his best of the year by some margin. 33-year-old Evans won more matches on Friday than he has done in the past three months after a woeful summer but the performances have been there, occasionally, to suggest a spark was all that was required. He will face a similar story in Dimitrov, who looks to have found a new freedom under coach Jamie Delgado, with his recent run to the round of 16 at Wimbledon also seeing a masterful display against Tiafoe.
Two of the best backhand slices in the business face off here with Dimitrov leading their head-to-head 3-2, although Evans claimed their most recent in Vienna three years ago and he also beat the Bulgarian here in 2016. Take Evans, battle-hardened and determined, to earn at least a set here to leave the victor up to chance or opt for three sets as three of their five encounters have needed a decider, including each of the last two.
