THE PREDICTION
Former world number six Gael Monfils was ranked outside the top 500 this summer but a remarkable return from injury has seen him stun the likes of Stefanos Tsitsipas and Alex de Minaur in deep runs at Masters events in Toronto and Cincinnati before picking up a 12th ATP title at the Stockholm Open earlier this month. The 37-year-old will be backed to the hilt and then some as France’s favoured showman and the notorious partisan cauldron at Paris-Bercy should see him supercharged until he meets a top 10 player. World number 21 Francisco Cerundolo is a very tough opener, though, as one of the more dependable performers on tour this season. The 25-year-old brings a three-match losing streak into Paris after an avoidable loss to Lorenzo Sonego in Vienna last week, though, and he has been far from his best since the start of the hardcourt swing. It is hard to avoid sentimentality here so back Monfils to earn at least a set inside an accumulator or risk the outright on its own.
BETTING TIP: Gael Monfils to win a set.
