World number 17 Frances Tiafoe overcame Borna Coric in four sets on Sunday for a seriously tough opening draw at the Australian Open and it does not get any easier against in-form Tomas Machac. 23-year-old Machac enjoyed a comfortable straight-sets victory over Shintaro Mochizuki on Sunday to settle some nerves after a slow start to 2024 but he ended last season in encouraging shape, reaching the quarter-finals of the Stockholm Open either side of some strong work at the Davis Cup whilst representing Czechia. 25-year-old Tiafoe is still far from the player who took Carlos Alcaraz to five sets in the semi-finals of the US Open two years ago but he will be dialled in for this first meeting with Machac, desperate as he is to finally string together another deep run. Sets should go both ways but Tiafoe can be backed to come through.
