World number 16 Frances Tiafoe made short work of Marcos Giron on Friday in an encouraging start to Indian Wells and the 25-year-old could be something of a sleeper agent this fortnight if he can maintain that level. The big-time atmosphere suits Tiafoe to a tee and the American exploded his popularity at home last summer with a brilliant run to the semi-finals of the SU Open, where he came as close as anyone to beating eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz in a five set defeat. 29-year-old Jason Kubler is a tough draw, though, after the Aussie backed-up a great win over Lorenzo Sonego with a comeback victory over Grigor Dimitrov as the Bulgarian had to retire in the third set. The Aussie should break the top 70 on tour for the first time no matter the outcome here but despite his efforts, and the warm welcome he will receive, the crowd will likely pull as one for Tiafoe. The American beat Kubler in straight sets in New York last summer but take him to edge through outright this time around.
