24-year-old Fiona Ferro set a career-high WTA world ranking of 39th just last March but the Frenchwoman’s form dipped away over the season. Ferro has two WTA titles to her name from Lausanne in 2019 and Palermo in 2020 on her favoured clay surfaces and it comes as no surprise that her best Grand Slam showing was a round of 16 exit at Roland-Garros in 2020.
ELINA SVITOLINA
27-year-old Elina Svitolina has lost both of her opening matches in 2022 to Anastasia Gasanova at Adelaide 1 and Adelaide 2 champion Madison Keys. The former world number three claimed her 16th WTA title last season at the Chicago Women’s Open but it was largely a year of what-ifs with many defeats coming in the latter stages of tournaments, including to Leylah Fernandez in the quarter-finals of the US Open. The Ukrainian made back-to-back quarter-finals here in 2018 and 2019 but her best Grand Slam results are semi-finals exits at Wimbledon and the US Open in 2019.
THE PREDICTION
Neither Fiona Ferro or Elina Svitolina has managed a tour-level win this season, with Ferro taking just one qualifying victory in Sydney this week through to a straight=sets loss to Elise Mertens as a lucky loser. World number 22 Svitolina is in danger of getting left behind at the top of the WTA with so many returning stars like Naomi Osaka and Simona Halep set to fight for top 10 places with the current new crop but she should have enough to get through this first round tie and then build confidence from there. Svitolina was the winner of their only previous meeting in straight sets last season on her way to the Chicago Women’s Open but taking her outright here is the suitably cautious move with a 0-2 record for 2022 so far.
