THE PREDICTION
The evergreen Feliciano Lopez will start his 25th season on tour here in Melbourne at 40 years young. The popular Spaniard’s most recent of seven career ATP titles came at Queen’s Club back in 2019, his second from that ATP 500 event, and he is still capable of occasional upsets like a three-set victory over Andrey Rublev at the Davis Cup Finals last November. Lopez beat world number 35 Lorenzo Sonego over five sets here last season to reach the third round and he has a serious chance of beating John Millman here with the Aussie in poor form. World number 80 Millman is on a four-match losing streak after defeats in the first round of both Adelaide events this year but the 32-year-old is anything but a quitter and five sets could suit him here as he searches for a better level. This has the scent of five sets about it between two dogged competitors and if you can take at least four sets do so. Otherwise, the winner looks to be on a knife edge but home advantage favours Millman to win at least two sets.
