This will be a really interesting rematch between world number 25 Elise Mertens and Emma Navarro, who set a career-high WTA world ranking of 23rd after beating the Belgian in the Hobart International last month. 22-year-old Navarro beat in-form Jasmine Paolini in straight sets on Sunday to maintain her remarkably consistent form on tour over the past eight or so months but Mertens comfortably beat Peyton Stearns to bring some strong momentum into the clash. Their first encounter last month in Hobart fell Navarro’s way very tightly in three sets and a similarly close result feels the likeliest outcome here, particularly as Mertens is at her best in hot hardcourt conditions. The three set option could be the shrewdest option here but backing Navarro to win at least one of them is the suitably cautious call.
