THE LOWDOWN

EMILIO GOMEZ

30-year-old Emilio Gomez qualified well as the 23rd seed last week to make his long-awaited main draw debut at the Australian Open. The Ecuadorian has played just one Grand Slam match before, when he took Lorenzo Sonego to five sets at Roland-Garros in 2020.

MARIN CILIC

World number 27 Marin Cilic has been in excellent form over the last few months, with his defeat to Thanasi Kokkinakis at Adelaide 2 on Saturday his fifth semi-final in his last six tournaments. The 33-year-old went to the finals of three with a 20th career ATP title won at the St. Petersburg Open and defeats to Aslan Karatsev in Moscow and Daniil Medvedev in the Davis Cup whilst representing Croatia. Cilic won the US Open in 2014 and he made the 2017 Wimbledon final and 2018 final here in Melbourne.

THE PREDICTION

In-form Marin Cilic will be a threat to all comers here in Melbourne after some seriously impressive form over the back end of last year and the start of 2022. The 33-year-old won two more ATP titles last season, his first since 2018, to prove some doubters wrong over his longevity and this looks a kind opening round for the former Australian Open finalist. Emilio Gomez has form for taking players all the way at Grand Slams with his only previous main draw match going to five, so take Cilic as the outright winner here for caution.
