THE PREDICTION

World number four Elena Rybakina is the defending champion here at Indian Wells after a serious purple patch this time last season saw her fall just one match short of securing a rare ‘Sunshine Double’ – back-to-back titles here and in Miami – as she finished runner-up to Petra Kvitova in Florida. The 24-year-old went on to lift her second Masters title in Rome in May but she struggled to find that intensity for much of the rest of the year, hampered by a series of injuries, illnesses and some controversial scheduling. Two titles for 2024 already, won in Brisbane and Abu Dhabi, says the Kazakh is one of the favourites this fortnight in the desert but defeat to Iga Swiatek at the Qatar Masters last month before withdrawing injured in Dubai throws some big doubts over that.

World number 84 Nadia Podoroska knows all bout struggling with injuries as she continues to scrabble back up the WTA rankings from a year-long absence. The 27-year-old is at her best on clay, with the incoming swing something of a make or break for her career, but a comeback win over Ashlyn Krueger on Wednesday was an impressive start to her Indian Wells campaign. Rybakina, however, should be blasting through this opener in straight sets as she aims to make a statement of intent.

TIP: ELENA RYBAKINA TO WIN 2-0
