THE LOWDOWN
World number four Elena Rybakina struggled with her serve in a WTA Finals debut to forget against Jessica Pegula but she should be improved in this vital second. The 24-year-old finished runner-up to Aryna Sabalenka at the Australian Open in January, from a set up, but she maintained her excellent form throughout the first half of 2023 to pick up her first two Masters titles at Indian Wells and the Italian Open.
World number nine Maria Sakkari finally won her second WTA title at the Guadalajara Masters last month, putting a very tough run of form behind her, making a 6-0 6-1 defeat to Aryna Sabalenka on Sunday a very surprising capitulation on her return to Mexico. The 28-year-old only made the WTA Finals in Karolina Muchova’s absence but she won all three of her group stage matches this time last season to prove she is capable – often more so – against the better players on tour.
THE PREDICTION
This is very interesting clash between two players desperate to put poor starts behind them in Cancun. The pair share a 1-1 head-to-head record but they have not met since Indian Wells last season, where Sakkari won their quarter-final in straight sets, since when Rybakina has become a much more considerable force. The Kazakh has struggled to find her ruthless best practically ever since winning the Italian Open in May but Sakkari only just avoided a double bagel against Aryna Sabalenka on Sunday to suggest the conditions in Cancun count against her relatively more defensive game more than many of the other finalists. Sakkari has earned at least a set in both of their previous encounters but back Rybakina to edge through this potential thriller.
BETTING TIP: Elena Rybakina to win.
