26-year-old Donna Vekic moved within four places of her career-high WTA world ranking of 19th this week after winning her first WTA title since 2021 at the Monterrey Open. The Croat is enjoying a renaissance under new coach Pam Shriver that could have seen her go even further than the quarter-finals at the Australian Open in January had she not met eventual champion Aryna Sabalenka at that stage. World number 95 Lesia Tsurenko came through qualifying this week before an impressive straight-sets victory over Lin Zhu, avenging her recent defeat to the Chinese in the Hua Hin final. The Ukrainian has been playing at a level far higher than her ranking suggests since last summer and this is certainly no gimme for Vekic, who only just squeaked past the 33-year-old in the first round of Monterrey. Given Tsurenko’s run-up, and that Vekic is coming in cold from a title win, backing the Ukrainian to earn at least a set could actually be the shrewd move here in leaving the victor up to chance even if Vekic should eventually come through the winner.
