27-year-old Dominik Koeper set a career-high ATP world ranking of 50th last year midway through the clay season which remains his best surface despite a stunning run to the round of 16 of the Paris Masters last November via wins over Andy Murray and Felix Auger-Aliassime. The German performed admirably in a four-set defeat to Roger Federer at Roland-Garros last season too and if he can find any of that form he could be a real threat over the next few rounds. World number 108 Carlos Taberner is another clay favourer who found plenty of success on that surface on the Challenger circuit last season. The 24-year-old certainly has a chance here with Koepfer starting the year poorly but the German should eventually come through the outright winner.
