THE PREDICTION
World number seven Holger Rune finally found some form at the Swiss Indoors last week, his first tournament under new coach Boris Becker, but he was awful in a semi-final defeat to eventual champion Felix Auger-Aliassime. The 20-year-old comes into Paris-Bercy as a defending champion with a huge question mark over his form, and by extension fitness, with all the pressure of retuning to the arena where he stunned Novak Djokovic from a set down in the final 12 months ago. The Dane is currently in eighth place in the Race to Turin but six players can still usurp him in Paris to heap even more pressure onto his campaign, with this opener against former number three Dominic Thiem tougher than it looks. 30-year-old Thiem is currently ranked outside the top 100 as he continues to labour in his return from wrist surgery but a comeback over old foe Stan Wawrinka on Monday will have thoroughly boosted his confidence.
Thiem will be all too aware that Rune’s current level is vulnerable but the Dane won their first encounter in straight sets at the Monte-Carlo Open back in April and he should be able to come through this opener unscathed. Leave this match out of any promising accumulators.
