THE PREDICTION
Former world number eight Diego Schwartzman came into Roland-Garros ranked 95th with a woeful 5-14 record for 2023 in a run of poor form stretching back to the US Open last summer. The 30-year-old dropped his first two sets of the campaign to Bernabe Zapata Miralles on Monday to look dead and buried but he has won each of his last five sets to oust the 32nd seed and then more confidently beat Nuno Borges on Wednesday to, tentatively, suggest he may have flicked the mental switch. This is a tough match-up for the Argentine against former finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas but the narrative will be fascinating between two players who have seriously struggled with their confidence on tour over the last few seasons. World number five beat Roberto Carballes Baena in straight sets on Wednesday to also look much improved on his four-set opener over Jiri Vesely and the Greek looks the solid favourite to win his section of the draw to set-up a blockbuster with Carlos Alcaraz in the quarter-finals.
Tsitsipas leads Schwartzman 4-2 in their head-to-head record and 2-0 on clay but the pair did share sets in two of their four matches last season, including a win for Schwartzman at the ATP Cup. Back Tsitsipas to win outright here in a match where the crowd will likely pull for the very popular Argentine.
