Daria Saville (née Gavrilova) received a wildcard into the first round of the Australian Open after falling into the 400s of the WTA world rankings with just seven tour-level matches played since the start of 2020. The former world number 20 has suffered several injuries over the last few seasons but she won her only WTA title to date at the New Haven Open back in 2017 in her last season inside the top 30. She will be a significant threat and well-supported as a naturalised Aussie, especially since her marriage to doubles player Luke Saville last year. World number 82 Rebecca Peterson is also better than her current ranking suggests as the winner of two WTA titles on the Asian swing in 2019. The Swede beat an out-of-sorts Aryna Sabalenka last week before a defeat to Madison Brengle and that makes taking her to win at least a set here the sensible move with a decider likely required.
