THE PREDICTION

World number 19 Beatriz Haddad-Maia brings the most convincing results into the semi-finals of the WTA Elite Trophy after beating reigning WTA Finals champion Caroline Garcia in straight sets on Friday. The 27-year-old made a big statement with a straight-set victory over Madison Keys in her opening match in Zhuhai but it could be argued that she has played two of the more erratic performers on tour ahead of an interesting clash with one of the more dependable in world number 17 Daria Kasatkina. That was certainly true last season, when Kasatkina qualified for her WTA Finals debut with a consistent level across the year, but 2023 has been far from it. The 26-year-old beat Magda Linette in straight sets on Thursday to back up a huge upset over top seed Barbora Krejcikova on Wednesday, proving what she can do in these conditions at her best, and it is likely that she turns up for the challenge here at the business end. Haddad-Maia beat the Russian in straight sets at the Qatar Masters earlier this season in their only previous encounter and backing the Brazilian to earn at least one here looks the sensible way to avoid picking a winner.

BETTING TIP: Beatriz Haddad-Maia to win a set.
