THE PREDICTION

This will be a fascinating and likely thrilling rematch between world number four Daniil Medvedev, defending Miami Open champion, and world number three Jannik Sinner, who finished runner-up to the Russian this time last season. 28-year-old Medvedev won each of their first six encounters, including their first two of four finals played last season both here and in Rotterdam, but the Italian has fabulously turned things around since, winning each of their next four matches including the Beijing and Vienna Open finals last year and, most importantly, from two sets down to claim his maiden Grand Slam title at the Australian Open. Each of their last three meetings have seen sets go both ways, including a tight semi-final at the ATP Finals late last season, and six of their 10 overall have needed deciders to suggest this will be another huge battle.

The story of Sinner’s evolution into the next likeliest new world number one has been set out in matches against Medvedev, who is starting to become the next-best figure of a contemporary ‘Big Three’, but the Russian has yet to drop a set this fortnight after a solid performance against Nicolas Jarry on Wednesday and he will be desperate for vengeance. 22-year-old Sinner has dropped one set so far, to Tallon Griekspoor in the third round, but he has played significantly better since to suggest he has recalibrated in time to extend his four-match winning streak over the Russian. Given their campaigns so far, and their most recent results, perhaps backing Medvedev to win at least a set is the shrewd way to avoid a result in a probable three-setter. If forced to side with a finalist, though, Sinner looks the likelier.

TIP: DANIIL MEDVEDEV TO WIN A SET
