THE PREDICTION
World number seven Daniil Medvedev made it 11 wins on the spin with a comfortable straight-sets victory over Alexander Bublik on Wednesday, backing-up excellent title-winning campaigns in Rotterdam and Doha last month. The 27-year-old looks ready to have a proper title at the Sunshine Double in the coming weeks after previously struggling there but this is no gimme against world number 20 Borna Coric, who leads their head-to-head record 4-2. Whilst the pair have not met since Medvedev beat Coric to the 2019 St. Petersburg Open title, Coric has proven himself a thorn in the side of top players on tour since his return to the tour last summer. The 26-year-old came back from a set down to oust Thanasi Kokkinakis to show he is fighting fit after recently withdrawing from tournaments and wins over the likes of Stefanos Tsitsipas, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Hubert Hurkacz and Rafael Nadal within the last six months suggest this match could come down to the wire. Medvedev’s winning streak says backing him to win outright remains the sensible call but straight sets would be a risk.
