THE LOWDOWN
World number three Daniil Medvedev looked set to crash out of the US Open after dropping the first set easily to Alex de Minaur but he turned the screw impressively to come back in four on Monday. The 27-year-old beat Novak Djokovic in three perfect sets here two years ago to lift his maiden Grand Slam title and he has reached a total of four major finals, finishing runner-up to Rafael Nadal here in 2019 and again at the Australian Open last season, one year on from finishing runner-up to Djokovic in Melbourne. Medvedev found some of the form of his career earlier this season to win five ATP titles, including a first on clay at the Italian Open to make it 20 career titles so far.
World number eight Andrey Rublev overcame a tough test by Jack Draper in four sets on Monday, with both players battling some horrendous conditions in the severe humidity in New York. 25-year-old Rublev is through to the quarter-finals of the US Open for the fourth time but despite making the last eight at all four majors, after completing the set at Wimbledon in July, he has yet to progress any further. Rublev finally broke his Masters duck at the Monte-Carlo Open in April to make it 14 ATP titles so far in his career.
THE PREDICTION
Friends and compatriots off the court, Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev share a storied head-to-head record that heavily favours the elder Russian 5-2. However, Rublev, who is godfather to his opponents’ daughter, has won two of their last three encounters in Cincinnati two years ago and in a tight three-setter at the ATP Finals late last season and the weather could come into play to level things a little here. Medvedev is an outspoken hater of playing in severe heat and humidity but he coped well enough against Alex de Minaur on Monday to suggest he remains the favourite here, although Rublev looked capable of going to five if he needed to against Draper. Medvedev has won both of their previous Grand Slam quarter-finals in straight sets here three years ago and at the Australian Open in 2021 but he has dropped two already this campaign as he struggles to find that elusive top gear from earlier this year. Take Medvedev to win outright with four sets about as likely as three.
