World number 26 Elina Svitolina looked sharp in Washington in two straight-sets victories over Victoria Azarenka and Daria Kasatkina but she came unstuck from a set up against former champion Jessica Pegula. The fact that the 28-year-old will be disappointed with a defeat to the world number four is proof of just how far she has come since her return from maternity leave and this looks her match to lose against the currently ailing Danielle Collins. World number 48 Collins finished runner-up to Ash Barry at the Australian Open at the start of last season but she has struggled, for the most part, to rediscover that ruthlessness on court. The 29-year-old is always a danger on a hardcourt but she needed three sets in each of her qualifying rounds to make the main draw and it is likely that she will find a new and improved version of Svitolina too much to handle. Collins beat the Ukrainian handily in their only previous meeting back in 2020 but Svitolina’s transformation on court is a sight to behold. Back the former world number three to win outright.
