THE PREDICTION

World number 69 Botic Van de Zandschulp grabbed his best result of an incredible season with a straight-sets victory over the St. Petersburg Open top seed Andrey Rublev. The 26-year-old Dutchman had to qualify for the main draw but he has since not dropped a set. This first meeting with world number 35 Marin Cilic is really interesting now with the Croat in such solid form. The former world number three and 2011 St. Petersburg Open champion has navigated two incredibly tough three set matches with Karen Khachanov and Roberto Bautista Agut to be here and he made it all the way to the Moscow Open final last week before defeat to Jannik Sinner. This should be an entertaining, robust semi-final that has the potential to sail over two hours. Cilic feels like the favourite here but Van de Zandschulp has been a thorn in plenty of players’ sides this season and he is still a relatively unknown quantity. The line is Cilic to win outright but taking the Dutchman to snatch at least a set could be more valuable.
