THE PREDICTION

World number 272 Dane Sweeny is yet to drop a set from qualifying through to the second round of his Shanghai Masters debut after an impressive win over Taro Daniel on Wednesday. The Aussie has played out a steady season on the Challenger and Futures tours this season without too much fanfare but he looks a real threat with some momentum behind him here. World number 29 Sebastian Baez found the form of his career only recently, winning back-to-back ATP titles on clay at Kitzbuhel and on a first on hardcourt at Winston-Salem, in a 12-match winning streak ended by eventual runner-up Daniil Medvedev in the third round of the US Open. The Argentine returned to tour in Astana last week to fall limply to Jurij Rodionov, suggesting there is the slightest chance of an upset here, but it is likely that he will be much improved on a bigger stage. An outright call for Baez is the suitably cautious move here, though, and that makes taking Sweeny to snatch at least a set a tempting one-off.
