THE PREDICTION

World number four Casper Ruud out some poor form so far this season behind him on Friday to beat Diego Schwartzman, also out-of-sorts, in straight sets. The win is hugely encouraging for Ruud, who finished runner-up at Roland-Garros and the US Open last season alongside the Miami Open and ATP Finals, but it remains to be seen how much better he can play in this intriguing clash with Cristian Garin. Former world number 17 Garin has been struggling with his form for much of the last two seasons but he handed Yoshihito Nishioka a second-set bagel on Friday to back-up a solid opener over Daniel Elahi Galan. The current world number 97 is, of course, capable of top 20 tennis still but it is hard to see when and where his occasional runs like this will come and more importantly why – with last summer’s run to the quarter-finals at Wimbledon a total anomaly from a poor year. Garin leads Ruud 2-1 in their head-to-head record but Ruud claimed their only hardcourt encounter at the 2022 ATP Cup and the Norwegian can be backed to edge through outright here.
