Both world number 100 Constant Lestienne and number 179 Denis Kudla qualified for the main draw at Indian Wells without dropping a set but 31-year-old Kudla’s wins over Hugo Gaston and Emilio Nava are the more eye-catching of the two. One of the more enigmatic players on tour, Kudla has been ranked as high as 53rd in his career with an impressive game for grass but injuries have held him back in recent seasons. Some strong recent results on US hardcourts, including a run to the last 16 in Dallas last month, suggest he can edge through this intriguing clash but Lestienne has won both of their previous encounters, albeit off the tour. The Frenchman has picked up a few encouraging results after a very poor end to 2023 but back Kudla to earn at least a set with home advantage behind him to leave this tricky result up to chance.
