World number six Coco Gauff beat Cristina Bucsa in straight sets for a comfortable opener at Indian Wells and the teenager should be considered a genuine title contender here with conditions suiting her excellent court coverage. This looks a serious early test, though, against another teen rising star in Linda Noskova who upset Amanda Anisimova in straight sets on Friday in hugely impressive circumstances. 18-year-old Noskova will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of around 47th if she can cause the upset here and a run to the final of Adelaide 1 in January suggests she can as it took Aryna Sabalenka to stop her after brilliant wins over Victoria Azarenka and Ons Jabeur. This will be Gauff’s last match on tour as an 18 year old, at least in singles, and she will be backed to the hilt by a boisterous, partisan atmosphere that should empower her to edge through this first meeting with a potential rival of the future. Back Gauff to win outright, although taking Noskova to earn at least a set may prove to be the shrewd move here.
