THE PREDICTION
World number 16 Ben Shelton beat former number nine Roberto Bautista Agut in straight sets on Monday for a statement opener in Melbourne. The 21-year-old burst onto the scene with an incredible run to the quarter-finals on his debut at the Australian Open this time last year and, after a tough run on the main tour, he usurped that achievement with an even better run to the semi-finals at the US Open, losing to eventual champion Novak Djokovic in four sets. Shelton made the semi-finals of the Auckland Classic last week before a surprise exit to Taro Daniel and an opening defeat to Roman Safiullin in Brisbane says the American is not as solid as his first round result here suggests.
This will be a tougher test against a home hopeful, with Shelton used to playing the young hero so far at prestigious events, as he takes on world number 68 Christopher O’Connell. 29-year-old O’Connell will be backed by a partisan crowd after his excellent five-set comeback over Cristian Garin on Sunday, building on some strong results in Adelaide last week, but Shelton can be backed to come through the outright winner – probably in four.
