CHRISTOPHER EUBANKS
25-year-old Christopher Eubanks grabbed one of the best results of his career in coming back from a set down to beat Maxime Cressy on Thursday. The world number 157 also won his first round match here last October but he will tread new ground at Masters level if he reached the third round.
CASPER RUUD
World number eight Casper Ruud won the seventh ATP title of his young career at the Buenos Aires Open last month. The 23-year-old won his first hardcourt title at the San Diego Open last season but the rest have come on his favoured clay, with three claimed in the space of three weeks last summer at the Bastad Open, Gstaad Open and Kitzbuhel Open.
THE PREDICTION
Casper Ruud is certainly in the top five clay-court players on the ATP tour but he is also an excellent player on hardcourts, particularly the slower ones like the conditions in the desert. The Norwegian has reached at least the round of 16 in each of his last six Masters tournaments, including here last season before a defeat to Diego Schwartzman, and it should take a player of much higher calibre than Christopher Eubanks to oust him here. Take Ruud to win outright inside an accumulator, with Eubanks impressive this week, or in two for a slight risk on its own.
