THE PREDICTION
Former world number one Caroline Wozniacki came back from retirement late last season with some remarkable success, reaching the round of 16 at the US Open before defeat to eventual champion Coco Gauff. The 33-year-old beat Petra Kvitova and former Australian Open finalist Jennifer Brady en-route to the last 16 in New York and she will be targeting more here in Melbourne on her return to the scene where she finally won her maiden Grand Slam title in 2018. Wozniacki was in control of her first round match before former semi-finalist Magda Linette was forced to retire injured, leaving the Dane more energy to combat an exciting young talent in Maria Timofeeva – who burst onto the scene last summer with a WTA title won on her tour debut at the Hungarian Open.
20-year-old Timofeeva qualified well last week to make her Grand Slam debut here on Sunday and she looked comfortable under the pressure against veteran Alize Cornet in a straight-sets victory. Wozniacki will be desperate not to fall at this stage of her comeback in Melbourne but this is tougher than it looks against a youngster with more tour wins than losses to her name. Back Wozniacki to win outright.
TIP: CAROLINE WOZNIACKI TO WIN
