THE PREDICTION
There is a real case for an upset here in a first meeting between world number two Carlos Alcaraz and number 94 Thanasi Kokkinakis. 19-year-old Alcaraz lost to Cam Norrie in the Rio Open final last time out as he struggled with an injury that saw him pull out of the Mexican Open last week and facing someone as powerful as in-form Kokkinakis on his first hardcourt match of the year will be a significant test. Furthermore, 26-year-old Kokkinakis is yet to drop a set this week from qualifying through to a commanding victory over Brandon Holt on Tuesday and only Jannik Sinner has managed to beat him this season without conceding a set. Backing the Aussie to earn at least a set looks the shrewd way to lean towards an upset without committing but there is also a chance that Alcaraz may not finish the match – as well as, of course, hit the ground running and blast through in two like the Grand Slam champion he is. Leave this match out of an accumulator for these reasons but otherwise back Kokkinakis to earn at least a set and consider adding at least a tiebreak in the match.
