THE PREDICTION
World number 21 Nicolas Jarry played one of the matches of his career against Carlos Alcaraz last summer at Wimbledon, taking the eventual champion to four tight sets before defeat on his weakest surface. The Chilean took the first set before defeat to Alcaraz at the Rio Open this time last season too to see a 0-2 deficit in their head-to-head not tell the whole story as they meet for a third, likely thrilling time here in Buenos Aires. World number two Alcaraz improved on a choppy opener to beat Andrea Vavassori on Friday but the defending champion is still far from his fluid, ruthless best and Jarry will be desperate to turn the screw here with South American support likely to get behind him as a hard-working underdog despite Alcaraz’s magnetism.
28-year-old Jarry has dropped the first set in both matches so far this week at the Argentina Open but it would not be a surprise to see that reversed here before Alcaraz finds a way through. Both of their previous matches saw at least a tiebreak to offer a suitable alternative to the result here but otherwise back Alcaraz to win outright – or combine the two.
TIP: CARLOS ALCARAZ TO WIN
